Elcometer Testing Explained: Ensuring the Quality of Every Coating

At Tankline, we don’t just apply high-performance coatings—we prove they’re applied correctly. That’s why every project is backed by detailed testing to confirm thickness, adhesion, and integrity.

Whether it’s a polyurea Spray-Coat system on a tank or a GRP laminate bund lining, verification is key to long-term performance.

Why Test at All?

Applying an industrial coating isn’t just a matter of spraying, laminating and walking away. If a coating is too thin, it may not offer proper protection. Too thick, and it can crack or delaminate. Improper adhesion can lead to blistering, peeling, and system failure.

That’s why we test every job—so you don’t just get a finish that looks good—you get a system that lasts.

What Is Elcometer?

Elcometer is a leading manufacturer of coating inspection tools. Their devices help us measure and validate:

  • DFT (Dry Film Thickness)
  • Adhesion strength
  • Surface cleanliness
  • Holiday (pinhole/void) detection
  • Moisture and salt contamination

These aren’t optional extras—they’re essential tools in our QA process.

Key Tests We Perform

Dry Film Thickness (DFT)

Using magnetic or ultrasonic Elcometer gauges, we measure the exact thickness of cured coatings in microns (µm).

  • Ensures the system meets the manufacturer’s minimum requirements
  • Identifies thin or overbuilt areas before handover

Adhesion Testing

We use Elcometer adhesion testers to check that the coating is properly bonded to the substrate. This involves pulling off a small glued stud under controlled pressure.

  • Confirms surface prep and primer performance
  • Required for warranty and guarantee validation

Holiday (Spark) Testing

For seamless coatings like polyurea or GRP, we check for pinholes or voids using a spark tester or wet sponge method.

  • Identifies invisible flaws that could lead to failure
  • Especially critical on bunds, tanks, or waterproofing systems

Surface Preparation Checks

Before application, we may test for:

  • Chloride contamination on concrete (salt deposits reduce adhesion)
  • Surface profile or anchor pattern (grit-blasted steel)
  • Moisture content in concrete (to avoid trapped vapour)
  • Ensures the substrate is fully suitable for coating

Reporting & Traceability

All testing results are recorded and included in our project handover pack—giving you full confidence in what’s been applied and how.

We also match these results to:

  • Product batch numbers
  • Application date and time
  • Operator and equipment used

This level of traceability ensures accountability and compliance, especially on regulated or safety-critical sites.

Quality That’s Measured, Not Assumed

Other companies may eyeball a coating—we prove it meets spec. With Tankline, you’re not just getting a surface treatment. You’re getting a documented, tested system built to protect your assets for 20+ years.

Quality Assurance? Let’s Talk.

From water tanks to chemical bunds, we offer certified coating systems backed by testing on every job.
