Tankline were called in to assess and install a new bund lining system at a water treatment facility in Hove. The bund in question housed an acid tank, so the specification needed to withstand a highly aggressive chemical environment.
Our Solution
Due to the concentration and corrosive nature of the acid stored, we selected an Epoxy Novolac Vinyl Ester Resin system for the laminate build-up. This resin offers superior chemical resistance, ideal for aggressive containment scenarios.
Surface Preparation
As with all lining systems, surface preparation is critical. The concrete substrate was mechanically ground and sanded to create a keyed surface for maximum adhesion. Once prepared, the bund was meticulously cleaned to remove all dust and debris — as cleanliness is essential for resin performance. We also took care to mask all nearby cable trays to prevent accidental resin drips, maintaining a tidy finish and avoiding future maintenance complications.
Laminate Application
A primer coat of Vinyl Ester Resin was first applied to the prepared surfaces. This low-viscosity resin penetrates the substrate and ensures excellent bonding. Our applicators then installed:
2 layers of 450g/m2 glass mat and a surface veil to all vertical surfaces
2 layers of 450g/m2 glass mat to the floor area
Once the laminate cured, the entire system was inspected. Given the confined geometry of bunds, sharp edges and spikes can occasionally form. These were carefully abraded and patched where necessary.
Finishing and Topcoat
A pigmented coat of resin was then applied to provide an aesthetic and chemically resistant finish. During this process, the bund was inspected again for contaminants, and any minor imperfections were sanded smooth.
To complete the system, a waxed resin topcoat was applied to all surfaces. For added safety, we integrated a silicate anti-slip aggregate into the floor areas, providing a grippy and durable surface for engineers working inside the bund.
Result:
A fully sealed, chemically resistant bund lining system with a robust anti-slip finish – ensuring long-term protection and safe access for water treatment engineers.
