Tankline were commissioned to refurbish a penguin pool where a GRP lining system installed in 2015 had failed. The client required a robust, flexible, and long-lasting solution that could withstand frequent filling and emptying — a routine occurrence every two weeks.

Our Chosen System: Spray-Coat
We recommended our Spray-Coat system, a high-performance polyurea-based solution known for its:
Flexibility – perfect for dealing with thermal expansion
Durability – resistant to cracking or wear under repetitive water load cycles
Fast cure times – ideal for minimising downtime in animal habitats
Seamless finish – eliminating joints where leaks can form
Surface Preparation
The existing GRP liner was mechanically cut and removed from the shell. Our team then diamond-ground the surface to create a keyed profile for strong adhesion and thoroughly vacuumed the area to ensure a dust-free finish.

With a heatwave in full swing, environmental conditions became a challenge. High daytime temperatures can cause coatings to cure too rapidly, leading to outgassing and other defects. To mitigate this, all coating work was carried out overnight, ensuring optimal conditions for application.
Application Process
Epoxy Primer: Two coats were applied to seal the concrete shell and provide a glossy, non-porous surface ready for polyurea.
Spray-Coat Application: Once the primer reached its minimum recoat window, we applied Prokol Rocathaan 136-T at 2.5mm via hot spray.
Topcoat: Two coats of Prokol Topcoat 35 in a bright, colour-fast blue were roller applied to deliver a durable, UV-stable finish.

Result
Thanks to the fast-curing nature of the system, the penguins were safely back in the pool within just five days, enjoying their refreshed environment with no disruptions.
