Case Study – Roof-Seal Back up Generator Roof

Tankline was commissioned to install our seamless Roof-Seal GRP system to an existing generator roof that had begun leaking, causing water damage to the equipment below. The original felt system had deteriorated over time, allowing moisture ingress and rotting the underlying timber. Our Roof-Seal system was selected to provide a durable, watertight and maintenance-free solution.

Preparation & Removal

The existing felt and rotten timber boards were stripped back completely, exposing the joists beneath. All waste materials were removed from site and responsibly disposed of. With the roof structure clear, precise measurements were taken and new OSB boards were cut and securely fixed to the joists. At this stage, the failed guttering was also removed and disposed of.

Installation of the Roof-Seal System

To prepare the surface, the OSB boards were sanded to promote resin adhesion. A polyester resin primer coat was then applied and left to fully cure before the reinforcement process began.

Pre-made GRP edge trims were cut to size and installed using clout nails, ensuring a neat and durable finish to all edges. To reinforce the structural joins, two layers of 450g/m² fibreglass matting (100mm strips) were embedded in polyester resin at every joint and between trims and the timber. This step is essential for long-term durability and system integrity.

Once cured, a full layer of 450g/m² fibreglass matting was embedded across the entire surface in polyester resin, creating a seamless, watertight layer. To guarantee quality, a resin seal coat was then applied to eliminate pinholes — a step often skipped by others, but crucial for complete protection.

Finishing Touches

After curing, the laminate was sanded smooth and finished with an isophthalic UV-stable topcoat. This top layer provides a tough, weather-resistant finish with excellent resistance to UV degradation.

The Result

The completed project delivered a fully sealed, structurally reinforced GRP roof. The Roof-Seal system now safeguards the generator equipment from the elements, reducing maintenance requirements and eliminating the risk of water ingress. The client now has the reassurance of long-term protection and peace of mind.
