Case Study – School Pool using Pool-Line System

Tankline were contacted by a school in Hertfordshire with a leaking swimming pool liner. The existing bag-style liner had torn, prompting the school to seek a longer-lasting, more durable solution.

We introduced the client to our Pool-Line system, highlighting key benefits such as:

Seamless finish – no joints, no weak points
Tear-resistant – unlike traditional liners
Colour-fast – retains its visual appeal over time
Extremely hard-wearing – withstands heavy use
Long lifespan – outlasts standard liners by up to 3x

Preparation & Repairs

To reduce project costs, the school assisted in removing the existing liner. Once removed, the underlying shell was high pressure water-blasted to strip away old coatings and reveal any structural damage.

All damage to the pool shell was repaired using Ardex concrete repair mortar, then allowed to fully cure. The repairs were then sanded smooth to promote strong adhesion of the new lining system.

Lining Installation

With the surface prepped, a coat of Vinyl Ester primer was applied and allowed to dry. Unlike other systems that may use polyester or isophthalic resins, we use Vinyl Ester resin exclusively in our laminates to prevent osmosis — a common issue in long-term water immersion environments.

The Pool-Line system included:

2 layers of 450g/m² glass matting and a surface veil to all vertical surfaces
2 layers of 450g/m² glass matting to the pool floor

All matting was pre-cut to match the pool’s varying depths. Our experienced applicators then installed the laminate system and left it to cure.

Finishing Touches

Once cured, a pigmented Vinyl Ester resin topcoat was applied for a clean, professional finish. Because the pool is used for swimming, any sharp edges or spikes were meticulously removed by blanket sanding the entire surface smooth. The pool was then thoroughly vacuumed to ensure a clean surface for the final coatings.

If lane lines are required, these are applied first, left to cure, and then masked off before the main blue finish is applied — ensuring crisp, durable marking lines.

Result:

A seamless, chemical-resistant, and aesthetically pleasing pool lining system that will deliver long-term durability, safety, and performance far beyond a traditional liner.
