Tankline were awarded this project to install a robust, flexible lining system in Stoke-on-Trent suitable for wastewater containment within steel tank units. These tanks are hired out during planned outages and can be transported and used across multiple sites throughout the UK and Europe, meaning the lining system needed to withstand varying climates, temperature fluctuations, and repeated handling during lifting, transport, and installation.
To meet these demands, Tankline specified and installed our Spray-Coat polyurea lining system.
Our Spray-Coat system is a 100% pure polyurea, applied using specialist plural-component spray equipment. This advanced polymer is completely solvent-free, contains zero VOCs, and was applied at a nominal thickness of 2.5 mm. The system offers excellent elongation and crack-bridging properties, making it highly resistant to movement, expansion and contraction, and fluctuating environmental conditions — ideal for mobile wastewater assets.
Surface Preparation & Quality Control
For long-term performance, surface preparation and quality assurance were critical.
- Steel substrates were abrasive blast cleaned to SA2.5
- Soluble salt testing and surface profile measurements were undertaken
- All results were recorded within the QA inspection report
- Blast-cleaned surfaces were thoroughly vacuumed to remove dust and debris
- Climatic conditions were checked and logged prior to coating application
Following preparation, a polyurethane primer was applied to the steel. Once cured, DFT checks and further climatic readings were completed and recorded as part of Tankline’s QA procedures.

Polyurea Application & Testing
The Spray-Coat polyurea system was then applied to the primed steel surfaces. Due to the rapid gel and cure characteristics of polyurea, the lining reached full integrity quickly, allowing spark (holiday) testing to be carried out within 24 hours.
Any identified pinholes were clearly marked and locally re-sprayed, ensuring a fully continuous, defect-free lining prior to completion.

Result
The completed system provides a seamless, chemically resistant, impact-tolerant lining capable of withstanding:
- Wastewater exposure
- Frequent transportation and lifting
- Variable European weather conditions
- Thermal movement and mechanical stress
