Chemical-Resistant Bund-Line GRP System Installed Within Live Hospital Environment
Tankline recently completed the refurbishment and lining of an existing blockwork containment bund at a hospital facility in Chelmsford, Essex using the Tankline Bund-Line vinyl ester GRP lining system.
The project involved the installation of a fully reinforced chemical-resistant fibreglass lining system designed to provide long-term containment protection within a critical operational environment.

Scope of Works
The scope of works included:
- Mechanical surface preparation by diamond grinding
- Removal of dust and debris by industrial vacuum cleaning
- Filling of concrete voids and surface defects
- Application of vinyl ester resin primer
- Installation of reinforced GRP laminate system
- Final resin sealing coats to the completed lining system
Surface Preparation
Correct surface preparation is essential for the long-term performance of any industrial GRP bund lining system.
The existing blockwork bund was mechanically prepared using diamond grinding equipment to remove surface contamination, laitance, and weak material while creating a suitable mechanical key for the new lining system.
Following preparation, all dust and debris were removed by industrial vacuum cleaning to ensure a clean and dry substrate prior to priming.
Concrete voids, surface defects, and imperfections within the substrate were repaired using a vinyl ester resin filler system to create a uniform and structurally sound surface for lamination.
Bund-Line Vinyl Ester GRP Lining Installation
Once preparation and repairs had been completed, the bund was resin primed using the Tankline Bund-Line vinyl ester system.
The containment area was subsequently lined using a reinforced fibreglass laminate consisting of:
- 2 layers of 450 g/m² chopped strand mat reinforcement
- Fully impregnated using chemical-resistant vinyl ester resin
- Consolidated to remove trapped air and ensure full laminate integrity
Following lamination, the completed GRP system was sealed and finished with two additional coats of vinyl ester resin to provide a seamless, durable, and chemically resistant finish.
