Commercial Swimming Pool GRP Relining Project – Scotland

Swimming Pool Refurbishment Using a Vinyl Ester GRP Laminate System

Tankline recently completed the refurbishment and relining of a commercial swimming pool in Scotland using a specialist vinyl ester GRP lining system.

The existing tiled pool structure was suffering from deterioration and water ingress associated with ageing swimming pool finishes. Rather than undertaking extensive reconstruction, a fully bonded GRP lining system was specified to provide a long-term waterproof solution and extend the operational life of the existing facility.

Pool Shell Preparation

Thorough surface preparation is one of the most important stages of any swimming pool relining project and is essential to achieving a reliable bond between the existing structure and the new lining system.

The pool shell was thoroughly water blasted to remove contaminants, loose material and surface deposits that could adversely affect adhesion. Damaged and broken tiles were replaced to create a sound and consistent substrate before installation of the new laminate began.

Tankline’s specialist high-pressure surface cleaning service is used to prepare swimming pools, tanks and other structures where effective removal of contamination and surface deposits is required prior to coating or lining installation.

Vinyl Ester GRP Laminate Installation

Following preparation of the pool shell, a heavy-duty glass reinforced plastic (GRP) laminate was installed throughout the pool using a premium vinyl ester resin system.

The laminate was carefully applied across the walls, floor, transitions and pool features to create a continuous, seamless waterproof barrier fully bonded to the existing tiled structure.

Combining fibreglass reinforcement with vinyl ester resin creates a strong composite lining capable of withstanding permanent immersion and exposure to swimming pool treatment chemicals. Tankline’s GRP lining systems are used across swimming pools and a wide range of other demanding waterproofing and containment applications.

Benefits of Vinyl Ester GRP Pool Linings

  • Excellent resistance to permanent water immersion
  • Superior chemical resistance
  • Long service life
  • Resistance to osmotic blistering
  • Exceptional bond strength to correctly prepared substrates
  • Seamless waterproof construction

Vinyl Ester Resin Sealing Coat

Following installation of the GRP laminate, a pigmented vinyl ester resin coat was applied to seal and encapsulate the fibreglass reinforcement.

This stage provides additional protection to the laminate while creating a consistent surface ready to receive the final decorative and protective pool finish.

Precision Swimming Lane Markings

Before application of the final finish, the swimming lane markings were carefully measured and set out to ensure accurate positioning and consistent alignment throughout the pool.

Jet black lane lines were incorporated into the system to provide excellent visibility for swimmers and create a professional competition-style appearance.

Blue NPG Flow Coat Finish

The pool refurbishment was completed with the application of a specialist blue NPG (Neopentyl Glycol) flow coat.

The bright blue finish transformed the appearance of the facility while providing a smooth and easy-to-maintain surface suitable for continuous immersion and exposure to swimming pool treatment chemicals.

Combined with the contrasting black lane markings, the new finish provided a clean, modern appearance while forming the final protective layer of the GRP pool lining system.

Completed Commercial Swimming Pool Refurbishment

The completed project transformed an ageing tiled swimming pool affected by deterioration and water ingress into a fully lined facility protected by a seamless GRP system.

  • High-pressure preparation of the existing pool shell
  • Replacement of damaged and broken tiles
  • Fully bonded GRP swimming pool lining
  • Vinyl ester laminate system
  • Long-term protection against water ingress
  • Excellent resistance to swimming pool chemicals
  • Seamless and easy-to-clean finished surface
  • Precision black swimming lane markings
  • Blue NPG flow coat finish
  • Extended service life of the existing pool structure

By retaining the existing tiled structure and installing a new composite lining directly over the correctly prepared substrate, Tankline provided a cost-effective alternative to complete pool reconstruction.
