Polyurea Swimming Pool Make-Up Tank Lining – Leisure Centre Project in Colchester

Flexible Pure Polyurea Tank Lining System for Leaking Sectional Panel Tank

Tankline recently completed the refurbishment and lining of a leaking swimming pool make-up tank at a leisure centre in Colchester, Essex using a flexible pure polyurea lining system.

The existing sectional panel tank had developed multiple leaks along the panel joints and seams, resulting in ongoing water loss and concerns regarding the long-term integrity of the tank structure.

Following inspection, Tankline proposed the installation of a flexible pure polyurea lining system designed to bridge movement within the panel joints while providing a seamless and fully waterproof internal lining suitable for long-term immersion in chlorinated water.

As experienced industrial tank lining contractors, Tankline delivers specialist lining systems for swimming pools, water tanks, process vessels, and industrial containment structures throughout the UK.

Scope of Works

The project included:

  • Removal of failed joint sealant and mastics
  • Mechanical surface preparation
  • Sanding and abrasion of internal surfaces
  • Vacuum cleaning of the tank interior
  • Installation of dehumidification equipment
  • Application of polyurethane primer system
  • Spray application of pure polyurea lining
  • Reinforcement of panel joints
  • Application of chemical-resistant topcoat system

Preparation Works

Correct preparation was critical to ensure long-term adhesion and performance of the polyurea lining system.

The existing failed mastic joints were removed from all panel seams before being mechanically shaved flush to provide a smooth transition across the tank panels.

The internal tank surfaces were then mechanically sanded and thoroughly vacuum cleaned to remove dust and contaminants prior to coating application.

To assist with moisture control and ensure suitable application conditions, dehumidification equipment was installed overnight to remove residual moisture from the substrate before priming and lining works commenced.

Polyurea Lining System Installation

Following preparation, the tank was primed using Prokol Primer Uni RW, a high-performance polyurethane primer designed to promote adhesion to the prepared substrate.

Tankline applicators subsequently installed Prokol Rocathaan 136-T pure polyurea using plural component heated spray equipment.

The system was applied at varying thicknesses to suit the tank structure and movement areas:

  • 5 mm thickness to panel joints and seams
  • 2.5 mm thickness to the remaining tank surfaces

The flexible nature of the pure polyurea system allows the lining to accommodate minor movement within the sectional panel tank while maintaining a seamless waterproof membrane.

Chemical Resistant Topcoat System

Following installation of the polyurea membrane, two coats of Prokol Topcoat 35 were applied to provide additional chemical resistance against continuous exposure to chlorinated swimming pool water.

This protective topcoat system improves long-term durability while enhancing resistance to chemical attack and cleaning regimes commonly associated with leisure centre water systems.

Why Polyurea Was Selected

Pure polyurea lining systems are particularly suitable for leaking panel tanks and immersion environments due to their:

  • Exceptional flexibility and elongation
  • Seamless waterproof finish
  • Rapid cure times
  • Excellent adhesion properties
  • Resistance to cracking and joint movement
  • Long-term immersion performance

These systems are commonly used for water tanks, swimming pool tanks, process vessels, bunds, and wastewater containment structures.

Project Completion

The works were successfully completed over a 5-day period with careful planning to minimise disruption to the leisure centre operations.

The completed lining system provided the client with a seamless, flexible, and chemically resistant waterproof membrane designed to prevent further leakage and extend the operational lifespan of the tank.

Tankline specialises in polyurea lining systems, swimming pool tank lining, water tank refurbishment, and industrial protective coating applications throughout Essex and the UK.
